P11 SOUND BITES: June Carter Cash

The company culture at P11 has always been focused on music. Since it’s the month of June, it seemed like a great time to honor music legend June Carter Cash. While her husband Johnny Cash gets his fair share of acclaim, June Carter Cash is equally as badass, talented, and legendary. While the “Man In Black” leaned into the darkness at times, June Carter Cash embraced the light. This multiple Grammy award-winning singer, musician, songwriter, Grand Ole Opry trailblazer, and author is quite a powerhouse. She was in a music group with her family, the Carter sisters, and then had a thriving solo career — all before marrying Johnny Cash.

She made her solo debut at the Grand Ole Opry in 1950 and later toured with Elvis Presley. Did you know she co-wrote the icon song “Ring of Fire?!” Her husband Johnny was the inspiration. Their duet smash hit “Jackson” with lyrics such as “We got married in a fever hotter than a pepper sprout,” earned them both a Grammy in 1968. Another one of her popular duets “Time’s A Wastin’” was written by June’s first husband Carl Smith. She earned her first Grammy as a solo artist for “Press On” in 1999. In 2005, the compelling, hold nothing back, biopic movie “Walk The Line” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon become an instant hit. Witherspoon earned an Oscar for her performance as June.

Her music is just as poignant and beautiful as ever. Do check out her catalog. Once Johnny Cash was asked what his version of paradise was. He said referring to June Carter Cash, “This morning, with her, having coffee.” FUN FACT: One of our communities, Durham Farms, is in Hendersonville, TN. This is the city in which June and Johnny chose to call home.
